Coroner finds Northland father died after fall through glass door
Brief
A coroner has found a Northland father of three died from fatal injuries sustained when he fell through a glass sliding door during an altercation.
In-depth
Trevor John Ruatoto, 28, died on 10 July 2021 after being taken to Bay of Islands Hospital unresponsive with injuries to his arm and head, before being airlifted to Auckland Hospital where he later died.
The coroner found he suffered penetrating sharp force injuries to his left arm when he fell onto a glass ranch slider, with a deep wound near his elbow severing major arteries and causing catastrophic blood loss.
Forensic evidence was accepted as very consistent with an accidental fall into a glass door, and the findings said there was no indication of an intentional assault causing the fatal injury.
Police were unable to determine the exact reason Ruatoto attended the property in the early hours, but concluded the man involved in the altercation had acted in self-defence and no charges were laid.
