Earthquake trio shakes north of Bay of Plenty

Brief

Three earthquakes were recorded north of Bay of Plenty on Tuesday evening, with the largest felt across parts of the upper North Island.

In-depth

The first earthquake was recorded at magnitude 5.6 at about 8pm, around 135km north of Te Kaha and at a depth of about 5km.

A second quake followed at 8:05pm, measuring magnitude 4.2 and occurring much deeper, at 33km below the surface and about 110km north-west of Te Kaka.

A third earthquake was recorded at 8:28pm, with a magnitude of 2.7 and a shallow depth of about 5km.

By Tuesday evening, nearly 2,000 people had reported feeling the first quake across Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel and Bay of Plenty, while the second was felt by just over 1,000 people and the third by fewer than 100.
