Kiwi exporters eye tariff refunds after US court ruling

4 May 2026

Brief

New Zealand exporters could recover up to NZ$1 billion in duties after a United States Supreme Court ruling overturned tariffs imposed under emergency powers.

In-depth

Modelling suggests the refunds could relate to duties paid on New Zealand exports subject to the tariffs between April 2025 and February 2026, with the refund process having started in April 2026.

Export sectors that may be affected include meat, dairy, fruit, wine and manufactured goods such as machinery, medical devices and instruments.

Eligibility is expected to vary by supply chain structure and by whether the New Zealand exporter is the importer of record for United States customs purposes, with some businesses needing contractual or legal avenues to recover duties from importers.

Other United States tariffs remain in place, including duties under Section 232 on steel, aluminium and copper, and New Zealand is also included in a Section 301 investigation that could lead to further trade measures.
