Lawson retires after Miami Grand Prix collision

4 May 2026

Brief

Liam Lawson was forced out of the Miami Grand Prix after colliding with Pierre Gasly in a race that ended early for both drivers.

In-depth

Lawson was running inside the top 10 after starting 11th when the incident occurred at turn 17 on lap eight, following a strong opening phase in which he moved up to eighth before losing places to faster cars.

The contact sent Gasly's car into the barriers and upside down before both drivers were able to walk away. Lawson reported gearbox damage and later said he had apologised to Gasly after the crash.

The Racing Bulls driver said his car went into anti-stall during the incident, and the team retired the car soon after due to terminal damage. Both drivers were summoned to speak with stewards about the collision.

The result marked another Miami Grand Prix retirement for Lawson, who also failed to finish the event last year. At the front, Kimi Antonelli took victory from pole ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
