The verdict is ready. The evidence will follow.

Its not her real name! Was this hiding the truth about the brotherly love?

The verdict is ready. The evidence will follow. There is something terribly inefficient about an investigation. Documents must be examined. Claims must be checked. People insist on knowing things before announcing them.

Fortunately, political commentary has abolished most of these delays.

The investigation involving Ilhan Omar offers an excellent opportunity to observe the improved system. Readers may select their preferred verdict immediately, then receive supporting evidence if and when it becomes available. It is justice on pre-order.

The underlying matter is serious. Federal agents searched the Minnesota congresswoman’s Washington home this month, and the Justice Department acknowledged an ongoing criminal investigation. Reuters reported scrutiny of immigration paperwork, citing people familiar with the inquiry. Omar denies wrongdoing. Associated Press, Reuters

That leaves a considerable amount to establish, which is precisely the sort of vacancy an opinion likes to move into.

Fox News reported that a court filing used an alternative name for Omar and, citing unnamed sources, claimed it was her birth name. Her office rejected the claim and maintained that Ilhan Omar is her real name. Fox’s October 22 report said she had not been charged. Fox News

An unexplained name in a filing calls for an explanation. In the modern information economy, however, it can be promoted directly to a revelation. Explanations require additional reporting; revelations merely require capital letters.

The full filing and underlying identity records have not been independently examined for this article. An unfortunate admission, I realise. We shall endeavour to compensate with punctuation.

Meanwhile, the old allegation that Omar married her brother has returned to circulation. Historical inquiries did not establish that relationship; PolitiFact’s 2019 review described inconclusive findings. Repetition has subsequently done what evidence could not: made the claim familiar. Familiarity is a splendid witness. It remembers everything except where it heard it. PolitiFact

Omar has described the investigation as politically motivated. That is her position, and she is entitled to make it. It still leaves the factual questions to be answered. MS NOW

One would hope that a congressional title does not come with a small laminated card permitting its holder to disregard immigration rules. One would equally hope that disliking a congresswoman does not qualify a person to conduct forensic genealogy from a headline.

These are modest ambitions. We should be able to manage both before lunch.

Apply the rules. Examine the records. Explain any case that can actually be supported. If the evidence fails to support an allegation, say so with the same enthusiasm used to announce it.

Until then, I suggest we leave a chair for the facts. They are running late, and several people have already taken their seats.
